High cost of medicine can cause some to make difficult choices

A 2013 Consumer Reports Best Buy Drugs Prescription Drug Tracking Poll of 1,136 adults reported that 44% of people regularly take on average 4.5 medications; 16% of them take 7 drugs or more.

However, the report continued, the high costs of those medicines can force families to choose between the medications they need and paying other bills. More than half of the people participating in the poll have taken potentially dangerous steps to help curb high medication costs. This included not filling a prescription (17 percent), skipping a scheduled dose (14 percent), and taking an expired medication (14 percent). Individuals without insurance coverage were far more likely to have skipped filling prescriptions … because they couldn’t afford them.

Why use the NOP Plus Card?

The report further stated that while overall health care spending has held relatively steady in recent years, the cost of drugs has outstripped inflation — sometimes by a long shot. The reasons remain controversial. What can be done to keep drugs affordable is even more contentious. One thing seems clear: If you need prescription medication, chances are good you'll be paying more for it.
